Answering the $64,000 Question: What is Your Current Salary?

Will you be underpaid in your next job? If you can't identify the exact point in your job search where you are going to lose every bit of your negotiating power, the chances are good.

This tipping point comes when you hear the words, "So, what is your current salary?" This pop quiz might come at any stage of the job search cycle. You may be asked up front, as you start an informational call, or the subject might not arise until you get to the offer stage; it could be slipped in anywhere, so you need to be prepared to deal with it. Mishandling this question will likely sound the death knell of your negotiating power.

How Long Should Your Resume Be?

Are you worried that your one page resume is too short to describe all of your achievement? Have you gone down to 9pt font and .25 inch margins? It's time to break out of the old one page resume trap and let your accomplishments run free.

From time to time, we have the pleasure of being asked to comment on resumes submitted to the Resume Rx Column of the Washington Post.

In this month's article, we advise a professional looking to move from an administrative career into one in the nonprofit sector. She has a one page resume and is worried that it undersells her. She is right.

Included in the report, titled Passion & Purpose: Raising the Fiscal Fitness Bar for Massachusetts Nonprofits, is a "call to action" in the form of recommendations that address significant financial and organizational weaknesses in the sector that emerged from this unprecedented scrutiny.
