Nine Questions That Should Guide Your Job Search
Twice during the past month,
Director of Job Seeker Services Erin O'Connor Jones
and I were interviewed by Dr. Zara Larsen for her
syndicated Circles of Change radio program. In each
of these interviews, we found that many of the issues
facing her listeners came down to several essential
questions that ought to guide their mission-driven job
search.
Knowing you want to work in the
nonprofit
sector is easy. It's often been described by
career changers as something they couldn't
not do. It's a fire in the pit of your
stomach, a yearning for more, a decision that
life is more than a paycheck. Yet figuring
out just where you fit into this vast and
wide-ranging sector is not so easy. The
following questions will help you begin to
determine where and what you can do.
This month, we've excerpted a
section of my book Change
Your Career: Transitioning to the Nonprofit
Sector, to remind you about, and help you learn
how to answer, the
nine questions that should guide every job
search:
1. What skills are in your toolbox?
2. Where did you collect the
experiences you
will bring to your next job? 3. What would you do if you could do
anything at all?
4. Which of your skills will transfer
into
the nonprofit sector?
5. What traits have brought you
success?
6. What type of formal education do
you
have?
7. What kinds of on-the-job training
have
you received?
8. What motivates you to make this
move?
9. Why is this the right time for you to
move into this new type of work?

Client Spotlight: Extreme Makeover Rebuilds The Fishing School!
ABC's hit reality show Extreme
Makeover: Home Edition recently completed a
massive renovation of NPAG Client The Fishing
School in Ward 7's Deanwood neighborhood. In just
eight days, a local home builder, with the support of
dozens of skilled workers and hundreds of United
Way volunteers, demolished the former facility and
constructed a brand new state-of-the-art youth
learning and community support center.
The new
building is approximately 6,700 square feet and
includes three classrooms, a technology lab, a study
hall outfitted with brand new computer work stations, a
recreation room, two full kitchens, and office space for
administrative and support staff.
