Creating Opportunity in the Nonprofit Sector
If you are committed to making a difference in the world, your career search may lead you to the nonprofit sector. Nonprofit organizations work in the realms of education, the environment, health, human services, international aid, religion, arts and culture, advocacy, philanthropy and more. The nonprofit sector can be a very creative place because it is beholden neither to shareholders to make a profit (as corporations are), nor the voters or elected officials (as government agencies ultimately are). A creative approach can work well when entering this field.
In this month's feature article, Heather Krasna, our new Director of Candidate Services and the author of Jobs That Matter: Find a Stable, Fulfilling Career in Public Service discusses helpful ideas on creating your own opportunities in the nonprofit sector.

This month we're reading Jobs That Matter: Find a Stable, Fulfilling Career in Public Service by our very own, new Director of Candidate Services, Heather Krasna, MS.
Jobs That Matter is the first book to cover tips for transitioning into careers in both the nonprofit and public sectors. It includes in-depth career assessments, information on over 60 public service job types, and profiles of 26 professionals with public service careers. Mission areas described in the book include human and social services, health, education, civil rights, the environment, infrastructure, finance and economic development, philanthropy, international development and relations, security and law enforcement, religion, and the arts. In addition, there are proven sample resumes and cover letters; specialized, in-depth job search tips for specific public service job searches, including the United Nations, CIA, State Department; and special tips for career-changers, students, veterans, and AmeriCorps and Peace Corps volunteers.

"Careful, comprehensive and informative, Jobs that Matter ...offers practical help with the tough questions: Where to start? How to focus the search? How to deal with styles of recruiting from most to least formal? The book offers exercises to help with the planning, examples of good resumes and cover letters, interesting profiles of real people doing real jobs across the country, and useful explanations of jargon. It has lots of useful references as well...Jobs that Matter will help any seeker Find a Stable, Fulfilling Career in Public Service." --Book review on Idealist.org
