Services for Nonprofits

We offer unbundled search services to those nonprofits that need highly tailored services or cannot afford fully retained search. Most of our clients choose a la carte from our offerings as their needs demand.

We provide packaged or hourly consulting in: job description preparation, outreach, resume screening, interviewing, reference checking, search committee management, and negotiation.

We are also available to train board and staff in any or all of these areas.

Our Commitment to Diversity

We make every effort to present diverse pools of qualified candidates for each search. Since 2007, we closed more than two thirds of our searches with women or minorities and close to a quarter with female minorities.

Hello!

Thank you for your interest in our employer newsletter.

In this edition, you'll find helpful tips, a feature article covering a topic central to hiring for nonprofits, as well as information regarding our consulting services. This newsletter is meant to help you in your hiring processes.

To that end, your feedback is appreciated so that we may continue to improve what we offer.

Attracting Talent in a Changing Economy

It is easy to assume in today's challenging economic climate, that there is plenty of talent for the taking, and that it will be quick and painless to attract and hire top talent. Surely you will launch a search for your next senior hire and be overwhelmed by hordes of highly overqualified, highly motivated job seekers, right? Contrary to what you might read in the headlines, that is not actually the case. In fact, today more than ever, it is easy to make the wrong hiring decision.

In this month's article, Laura Gassner Otting explores the importance of remaining aggressive in your pursuit of all possible candidates and how you can construct a search process to entice the "right applicant" who may not necessarily be actively looking at the moment.

Special Olympics Appoints Strategic Gifts Officer

We are pleased to share that our client, Special Olympics International, has appointed Darnell Burtin as Strategic Gifts Officer based in Washington, D.C. He will work proactively across the sports movement and lead the expansion of their collaborative major gift efforts.

Darnell is a seasoned major gift fundraiser, having held gift officer positions at the Salvation Army as well as at major universities, including Purdue, Georgetown and American. At each of these organizations, he managed a large and geographically diverse portfolio of prospects and donors, working to identify and cultivate new relationships and steward existing ones. Those who worked with him at his previous positions champion Darnell's strong skills in donor research and strategic planning, personal and collaborative cultivation, and soliciting mission-centric gifts from supporters.

Educated in the sciences and engineering, Darnell earned a BS in Physics from Illinois Wesleyan University. He was an All-American track and field athlete, competing in the long jump and short track events. He and his wife, a Johns Hopkins School of Education Professor, live in Maryland with their two children.

Special Olympics is a global nonprofit organization targeting the nearly 200 million people around the world with intellectual disabilities. With active programs in over 170 countries and seven world-region offices, Special Olympics reaches more than 3.4 million athletes with intellectual disabilities - and continue to expand.

Career Pathways Leadership Program
2011-2012
Presented by the Council on Foundations

Applications & Nominations Welcome

NPAG has been pleased to partner with the Council on Foundations and be part of their speaker series used to educate the 2010-2011 class. The Council on Foundations is currently accepting applications and nominations for participation in the 2011-2012 cohort.

Launched in 2010, Pathways is a 12-month leadership preparation program for individuals currently employed in foundations and grant making institutions.

The program prepares candidates from diverse backgrounds to grow their capacity to serve the field of philanthropy, and to compete for and earn positions as philanthropic leaders. By bringing together talented high-level senior managers from diverse backgrounds with philanthropic leaders and executive search consultants, we strengthen the pipeline of talent excellence in philanthropy.

COF will be holding an informational teleconference on Monday, April 18, from 2-3pm Eastern. For early consideration, application materials are requested by March 31, 2011. The application can be found on COF's website.

What We're Reading

The Big Shift: Navigating the New Stage Beyond MidLife

In a game-changing new book, Civic Ventures founder and CEO Marc Freedman argues that we're having trouble acknowledging the obvious: We're all getting older, but most of us are not getting old ... at least not yet. The Big Shift: Navigating the New Stage Beyond Midlife is Freedman's impassioned call to accept the decades opening up between midlife and anything approximating old age for what they really are - a new stage of life, an encore phase that constitutes something entirely new.
