Salem, Massachusetts
The School for Field Studies (SFS), the
nation’s oldest and largest field-based, environmental study
abroad program seeks a Director of Marketing to develop and
implement a highly integrated marketing program designed to
elevate the visibility of SFS and its distinctive programs
across the globe; increase participation from prospective and
enrolled students; deepen alumni, parent and donor engagement;
and strengthen the position of SFS as a vital force in
advancing the understanding of the complex connections between
humans and nature and in developing sustainable solutions to
critical environmental problems.
Located in historic
Salem, Massachusetts, SFS creates transformative study abroad
experiences through field-based learning and research. It
offers fully accredited, college level courses on a semester
and summer basis, and conducts research for community clients
through its five-year research plans. SFS operates Centers in
Turks and Caicos, Australia, Mexico, Costa Rica, Tanzania and
Kenya with full time resident faculty and staff, and also
offers related programs in Bhutan. Its educational programs
explore the human and ecological dimensions of the complex
environmental problems faced by its local partners,
contributing to sustainable solutions in the places where
people live and work.
This $6 million global nonprofit
organization has just completed a strategic planning process
and is entering a period of growth. SFS alumni, more than
14,000 strong, are making valuable contributions in a
multitude of professions throughout the world. The SFS
community is part of a growing network of individuals and
institutions committed to environmental stewardship.
Reporting to the Vice President of Finance & Operations and
working collaboratively with the President and colleagues, the
Director of Marketing (DoM) will create innovative strategies
to expand programs and increase participation from diverse
constituents and global communities. S/he will manage a
fully-integrated marketing plan to promote and distinguish the
SFS brand - enhancing its mission, image, perceived quality
and relevance. S/he will develop and implement tailored
marketing and communications activities for enrollment,
academic and alumni programs, utilizing electronic, social
media and print platforms. S/he will supervise a
communications specialist and a marketing coordinator.
The ideal candidate will have demonstrated achievement in
developing and implementing marketing and communications
strategies which resulted in increasing the visibility of,
participation in and contributions to a nonprofit
organization, preferably within the context of a higher
education or environmental organization. An enthusiastic and
performance-driven team player, s/he must possess cultural
sensitivity and the ability to exercise sound judgment while
working collegially in a demanding and intellectually
challenging environment that requires handling multiple tasks
around ambitious deadlines. The DoM will possess outstanding
organizational skills and attention to detail; excellent
written and oral communication and presentation skills; and a
passion to articulate and advance the SFS mission and purpose
in collaboration with faculty, students, alumni, staff, donors
and other stakeholders.

principles and experience in the application of constantly
evolving digital age engagement technologies and techniques.
The successful candidate will have hands-on experience in the
design, editing, and production of electronic and print
materials, preferably in a higher education or environmental
context. Prior study or travel abroad is desirable, as well as
enthusiasm for environmental causes; knowledge of Spanish is a
plus. Occasional travel as well as evening and weekend
