A.
GENERAL SUMMARY OF POSITION:
The
The Director of Development, Principal Giving
will coordinate the fundraising activities of the newly organized Principal
Giving Group, composed of the Chancellor, the Vice Chancellor for Development
and Alumni Relations, the Executive Director for Development, the Director of
Development, Principal Giving, the Associate Vice Chancellor for Constituent
Programs and the Director of Strategy and Research.
The Director of Development, Principal Giving will collaborate closely
with unit-based Directors of Development and their academic/program supervisors
in developing and coordinating strategic cultivation and solicitation plans for
assigned prospects. Reporting to the
Executive Director for Development, the Director of Development, Principal
Giving will also be responsible for managing a select portfolio of donors and
prospects. Identification and
qualification of new high-capacity prospects is a high priority for this
position.
B.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: (Identify
those duties that demand the greatest amount of time, attention, and are of key
priority to the department. Include
any duties which present unusual physical requirements such as standing,
walking, exposure to chemicals, etc.)
1.
Staff the
Chancellor and Vice Chancellor on all aspects of principal gifts work requiring
their involvement, including gift strategy, proposed development, visitation
logistics, etc.
2.
Establish agendas
for and direct principal gift discussion meetings for the Principal Gifts Group.
3.
Facilitate and
track strategy development of all prospects, irrespective of primary manager,
who have a rated capacity with $1 million or greater.
4.
Participate fully
in the prospect assignment and management process and in the formulation of
fundraising and campaign strategies.
5.
Accompany and
assist the Chancellor and/or Vice Chancellor on select fundraising calls.
6.
Develop and manage
a portfolio of 25 – 50 donors and prospects at the principal gift ($1,000,000
and above) level.
7.
Attend all
appropriate donor cultivation and stewardship events, including campaign-related
meetings and events.
8.
Perform other
fundraising tasks as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
(Minimum required level of education; required licenses; years and nature of
related experience; unique requirements related to physical ability, travel,
working evenings and weekends, etc.)
QUALITIES AND CHARACTERISTICS:
Demonstrates:

confidence, enthusiasm, initiative, analytical ability, understanding of
complex, decentralized development programs, the capacity to inspire
cooperation, understanding of the vital importance of public higher education, a
sense of humor and understanding of the breadth and complexity of a major
research university.
Proven skills:
excellent interpersonal skills, organizational abilities, and a team
player.
Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree
preferred.
Minimum of five years of progressively
responsible senior fundraising experience required, preferably in a
university setting.
Proven track record of successfully
identifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding prospects at the six
figure level and beyond required.
Substantial experience working with senior
level volunteers and senior administrators required.
Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written
communication skills required.
Knowledge of best practices prospect
management policies and systems utilized in complex university development
operations required.
Excellent organizational skills and ability
to manage multiple projects and priorities required.
Highly motivated, enthusiastic collaborator
required.
Ability to work with diverse groups of people
required.
Ability and willingness to travel is
required.
Ability and willingness to work evenings and
weekends required.
Experience with a comprehensive campaign is
preferred.
