For nearly 100 years, the ACLU has been our nation’s guardian of liberty through its work in courts, legislatures, and communities to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties that the Constitution and the laws of the United States guarantee everyone in this country. Today, the work of the ACLU is more critical than ever. After the 2016 election, the not-for-profit, nonpartisan organization experienced tremendous growth with nationwide membership quadrupling from 400,000 to 1,600,000.
The ACLU of Washington (ACLU-WA) is regarded as one of the strongest state offices in the ACLU's nationwide structure. With more than 80,000 members, 40 full-time staff, hundreds of volunteers, and a budget of $7.2 million, the ACLU-WA is a powerful force for protecting and promoting a broad range of civil liberties, including de-incarceration, immigrants’ rights, racial justice, free speech, privacy, reproductive rights, LGBTQ equality, and more. The ACLU-WA has a long record of cutting-edge advocacy, leading to many nationwide firsts: one of the first laws legalizing marijuana, the first state ballot initiative to protect marriage equality, one of the first court orders holding that when the military excluded a gay person it violated the law, the first class action challenging under the American with Disabilities Act the refusal to provide medically assisted opioid treatment to people in jail, and the first court rule to reduce implicit racial bias in jury selection.
At this pivotal moment in our nation's history and at this time of dynamic growth in the organization, the ACLU-WA seeks an accomplished leader to serve as its next Executive Director. This is an extraordinary opportunity for a chief executive to lead an established, respected, and growing organization in its mission to defend and advance the civil liberties of individuals and communities in Washington.
The Executive Director will first and foremost provide strategic leadership and manage the ACLU-WA’s operations and advocacy to ensure that the organization uses its litigation, policy, political, and communications tools to the fullest effect. The ideal candidate will have extensive executive leadership experience and a demonstrated ability to manage the operations and finances of a comparable organization, coupled with a genuine commitment to and passion for the ACLU’s mission. The next Executive Director should have a deep substantive knowledge of civil liberties, an exceptional talent for strategic thinking and execution, proven success raising money, superb communication skills, an ability to inspire and mobilize a diverse group of individuals around a shared vision, a demonstrated commitment to racial equity, and experience building a strong workplace culture where all staff are valued and supported.
This search is being conducted with assistance from Katherine Jacobs, Carolyn Ho, and Chris Cannon of Nonprofit Professionals Advisory Group (NPAG). The salary range for the position has been set at $165K to $220K and is commensurate with experience.
