Makeba brings over 15 years of experience in education, social work, collective impact, and nonprofit management to her work with NPAG. Prior to joining NPAG, Makeba coordinated a $60 million portfolio of grants and contracts for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, working on both the U.S. Education Team and the local Pacific Northwest Teams. While at the Gates Foundation, Makeba developed valuable skills as a connector and thought partner, ensuring that grantees received the resources, information, and direct support they needed to succeed.
Makeba’s previous work experience includes policy and program roles with the Children’s Home Society of Washington, Communities in Schools, and World Vision. Her commitment to mission-driven executive search stems from a love of working with people, and the belief that strategic leadership is the force behind all successful social change. She began her career as a high school history teacher in Baltimore, and has served as a child protective services social worker and foster care advocate.
Makeba holds both an MPA and MSW from the University of Washington, along with dual bachelor’s degrees in History and Education from the University of Maryland. She is active in her local Seattle-area nonprofit community, serving on the boards of The Children’s Alliance and The Mockingbird Society.
